The spider plant is an unusual garden plant both for its intricate flower shape and its large size. Cleome hassleriana is an annual that can grow as tall as 5′. The tall plants are crowned by the flowers themselves, which resemble large, pastel spiders with many stamens protruding downward giving the appearance of legs. The leaves are also large, growing up to 8″ across. With a spider plant in a flower garden, no one will be able to overlook the high plant with its memorable, unusual flowers.
Plant the seeds in an area that gets full sunlight and good drainage. Thin out the spider plant seedlings until they are at least 18″ apart. The flowers will bloom in the late spring or the early weeks of summer, depending on the local climate. The seeds can be planted outdoors during the fall, or they can be started indoors during the spring and transplanted to a sunny spot in the early spring after the last frost. You can also plant the seeds directly in the soil after the last frost. The seeds are packaged and germination tested for current year.
